ShopperHopper Help
How your shopping list works – step by step
Putting something on the list
Type what you need into the field at the bottom, "What do you need?". Matching items with pictures appear right above the field while you type. Tap one and it goes on the list, and the field is free for the next thing straight away.
ShopperHopper also finds other names and spellings for the same thing.
Yes. Write everything in one line, for example "2 liters of milk and 6 eggs". Above the matches, ShopperHopper then shows "Going on the list" with all the things and their amounts. Enter or the button below puts everything on the list at once – two items, each with its amount.
At the very bottom of the matches it then says "Add …". A tap puts the word on the list right away, exactly as you wrote it. Shortly afterwards it gets a category and a matching picture – for that, the word goes to our server, which sorts it in with the help of an AI. Without a connection this happens as soon as you're back online.
Speaking and taking photos
Tap the microphone in the field and speak, for example "two liters of milk and six eggs". ShopperHopper writes along, and the preview grows while you speak. Nothing goes on the list until you tap a match or press Enter – so nothing misheard ends up on the list by itself.
Your keyboard's microphone works the same way.
Tap the camera in the field and photograph the product, or pick a picture from your gallery. ShopperHopper shows you what it recognized, and you decide: "Add to list" with the catalog picture, or "With my photo".
It recognizes the product, not the brand: a bottle of a particular cola becomes "Cola". For this, the photo goes to our server and is not stored there. The number of free photo recognitions per day is limited – typing always works.
Yes. Long-press the item, then tap the picture at the top: take a photo, choose one from your gallery, or remove your photo again. Your photo stays on your device – even on shared lists, the others keep seeing the catalog picture.
In the shop
Tapping an item puts it in the cart. It moves down under "In the cart" and stays visible there, so you can see what you already have. Another tap brings it back onto the list.
After shopping, "Done shopping" empties the cart. The items don't vanish without a trace – afterwards they're under "Recently used".
Forgot? Two hours after the last item went into the cart, it empties itself. On shared lists this applies to everyone – so it never happens in the middle of shopping, as long as someone is still putting things in.
- Ticking off means "I've bought it": the item goes into the cart.
- Take off the list means "I don't need it after all": the item is gone – on shared lists for the others too.
"Take off the list" is the trash can at the top right when you long-press an item. For a few seconds afterwards you can take it back with "Undo". A swipe to the left on an item deletes it too, but without "Undo".
Deleted by accident? Under "Recently used" the item is back with one tap.
The items that were last on this list – every list has its own history. A tap puts an item back on the list. After a few weeks, your weekly shop almost writes itself. "Clear history" forgets everything, for example after a one-off big shop.
Amount, details and markers
Long-press the item. There you'll find:
- Amount – number and unit separately, plus suggestions that fit the item (sugar in 500 g or 1 kg, eggs by 6 or 10).
- Detail – free text such as "organic" or "lactose-free". Whatever you've written once, ShopperHopper suggests next time.
- Marker – "ASAP" or "Can wait", and independently of that "Only if on sale".
- Category – where the item belongs on this list.
Everything applies straight away, there's nothing to save. "Done" just closes it.
A tap on the flag opens the markers: "ASAP", "Can wait" or "Only if on sale". A tap on one of them sets it or takes it off again. "ASAP" and "Can wait" exclude each other, "Only if on sale" goes with both.
Once a marker is set, it takes the flag's place. When an item comes back onto the list later, last time's markers are gone – amount and detail stay.
Some items have close relatives that look different: sugar, powdered sugar, sugar cubes. A tap on one of them swaps the item, picture included – amount and detail stay.
When you long-press an item, it says at the top, under the name and category, when it was added, last changed or put in the cart. On shared lists it also says by whom – for example "Put in the cart by Susan, 5 min ago". For that, the person needs to have entered a name under "Your name"; otherwise it says "by someone else".
Lists and order
Yes, for example one for the supermarket and one for the hardware store. The lists button to the left of the field – or a tap on the list name at the top – opens the list menu: switch list, new list, rename, delete.
Yes, with Premium – handy when you shop for more than one household. In the list menu, tick the box in front of another list. Both then share the screen, mixed by the categories of the list you had open – one walk through the store. Every item carries the name of its list in that list's color.
Above the input field it says "Adding to: …": that's where you choose which list new items go onto. A tap on a list name in the menu shows that one alone again. Unticking a box always works, even without Premium.
Open "Sort categories" in the list menu and drag the categories until they match your way through the shop. That's also where you create your own categories. This applies to each list separately – and on a shared list to everyone who shares it.
To move a single item to another category, long-press it and choose under "Category".
At the top right: List, Tiles or Large tiles, sorted by category or as entered. In the tile views you can swap the category headings for a small icon on each tile – that saves space.
Every list remembers its view. A new list takes over the view of the list that's currently open.
Shopping together
Nothing gets lost. ShopperHopper syncs every change on its own: if one person changes the amount and the other ticks off the same item, both are kept. Only when two people change exactly the same field does the more recent change win.
With a name, the others on your shared lists see what comes from you – for example "Added by Frank". You set it in the list menu under "Your name". The app asks for it when you share or join a list, but "Later" is always fine.
Only the people you share a list with see your name. It's optional, and it doesn't have to be your real one.
With "Stop sharing" in the list menu. The list stays on your device and the others keep their copy – you just stop syncing.
The server no longer knew your device, for example after a very long break, and it signed in again. In the process it dropped out of the shared lists named in the message. The lists themselves are still on your phone. To take part again, ask someone who still shares the list for a new code and join it again.
Your data and no signal
Yes. The list works in the basement, in an underground car park or in a dead spot. Changes to shared lists go out as soon as there's signal again, and nothing gets lost. Only what needs a connection – sorting in a new word, recognizing a photo, receiving news from the others – happens a little later.
- Lists you don't share never leave your phone.
- Shared lists are stored on our server so the others can see them.
- An unknown word and a photo for recognition go to our server. The photo is not stored there.
- You need no account, no email address and no password.
Everything else is in the privacy policy.
With "Delete my data on the server" in the list menu. The server then forgets your phone: your name, your memberships in shared lists, and lists only you had shared.
Everything stays on your phone. Your shared lists are no longer shared afterwards, though – the app names them and shows a notice with "Share again" above each one. If others are still on a list, ask them for a new code instead. What you added to other people's lists stays there for them.
This doesn't cancel a Premium subscription – you do that in the Play Store.
Because there's no account, your lists live on your phone. You get a shared list onto the new phone by asking for a new code and joining – from a second device of your own, too. A list you've never shared stays on the old phone. If you want to move it, share it with yourself once beforehand.
